How to build a compilation from six songs

A compilation is the second most-watched thing on a kids channel after the song that made it. Most are assembled backwards. Here is the assembly order that works.

Once a channel has six or more songs, the compilation question arrives, usually phrased as "can I just put them all in one video?". You can, and the honest answer is that most people do it in the way that works worst: export the six finished videos, join them end to end, upload. The result is long, and long is good for watch time — but a stitched file is the weakest version of the idea.

Why the stitched file underperforms

Two problems compound. First, the seams: a viewer (or a parent with the phone) feels the join at every song boundary — the music stops, a title card flashes, the energy resets. Those seams are where a compilation loses its audience, and toddler audience loss is permanent; they do not skip back. Second, the algorithm reads a straight re-upload of six videos as exactly what YouTube's reused-content policy calls it: nothing new. The compilation should be a genuinely different object, not a container.

Sequence for the way it is actually watched

A compilation is not a greatest-hits list. It is watched in one sitting, usually at the end of the day, so it needs a shape rather than a ranking.

  1. 01

Open with the strongest hook, not the best song

The first fifteen seconds decide whether the session happens at all. Pick the song whose opening line grabs hardest — not your personal favourite — and start there, ideally mid-energy rather than with a slow build.

  2. 02

    Alternate the energy

Two high-energy songs back to back blur into one long noise; two slow ones lose the room. Sort the running order like a set list: loud, loud, calm, loud, calm, calm. The last slot goes to the calmest song — that is the one parents replay at bedtime, and bedtime replays are the most loyal views a kids channel gets.

  3. 03

Cut the dead air at every join

Trim each song to start within half a second of the frame. Remove every end card, subscribe reminder and outro from the component videos — the compilation is one continuous piece, not six videos queuing.

  4. 04

    Match the loudness across songs

If the six masters were not made in one session, one will be louder and it will sound like a mistake every time it ends. Normalise every song to the same level (around -14 LUFS is the usual target for YouTube) before you join anything.

The connective tissue is the product

What turns six songs into one video is two to three seconds of new material between them: a bumper scene where the mascots wave, hop or point to what comes next. It does not need dialogue. It needs to exist, because it is the only part of the compilation that is unreusable anywhere else — which is precisely what makes the whole video read as original rather than assembled. If your mascots differ between songs, the bumpers are also where a viewer notices, so keep the character sheets open while you make them.

Title it like a set, not a format

The word "compilation" is a format label, and toddlers cannot read. Name the set the way the channel names its characters: "The Milo Big Book of Songs" says what it is and belongs to a series you can extend. In the description, list each song with its timestamp — parents navigate compilations by content, and the timestamps are also the only part of the page the search algorithm reads as evidence of structure.

Keep the singles

One warning worth its own paragraph: the compilation never replaces the component videos. Some channels delete or unlist their singles once the compilation is up, to push the session video. That throws away six indexed pages that each rank for their own song, and a compilation cannot inherit them. The compilation is an additional surface — the sixth place a song can be found, not the new home of all six.

The Blue Flower drop on 14 October ships six kits written to be compiled: one house style, one mascot universe, and an assembly order in every kit that already assumes the set. If you buy two or three from a drop, the bumpers and the loudness work are the only connective tissue left to make — the songs are written to sit next to each other.
